Jul 14, 2023 09:45 AM - 11:15 AM(America/Los_Angeles)
20230714T0945 20230714T1115 America/Los_Angeles Symposium #1: Racial oppression: systems of support and influences when experiencing oppression

This symposium will focus on examining systems of oppression impacting people of color and highlight systems of support linked to these groups. While research on racial oppression has grown continuously, less is known about specific forms of oppression and current forms of resistance for the same. This symposium highlights four independent and diverse studies carried out by psychologist with expertise on race-related oppression. The first study explores impact of immigration status-related microaggression impacting students of color. The second study addresses the specific experiences and challenges Latina women face in STEM majors. The third study explores implications around factors when experiencing racial microaggressions and its influence in identity development. Finally, the four presentation will address systems of support found in academia for people of color. Our presenters will discuss implications and recommendations for the field to better support people of color in higher education.
