20230714T1345 20230714T1515 America/Los_Angeles Interactive #6: Mending Wounds of Racialized Trauma: Perspectives, Research, and Clinical Experience

Extant research has shown that race- based traumatic stress damages the souls and psychological well -being of people of color (Alvarez, Liang, C., & Neville, 2016). Racialized trauma refers to mental and emotional injury caused by repeated encounters with racial bias, hostility, discrimination, and/or harassment (Carter, 2007). These lived experiences and injustices can negatively impact the psychological well- being of people of color and cause emotional pain. This panel discussion will draw upon the panelists' clinical and research experiences to help participants learn about racialized trauma, ways of navigating and healing from the impacts of racialized trauma, and how to mitigate the impact of racism in attendees' personal lives and in their clinical work. We will use didactic activities from the book Black Lives Are Beautiful: 50 Tools to Heal from Trauma and Promote Positive Racial Identity (Steele & Newton, 2023) to explore these issues. The scholars of this panel will also address the following: 1) Based on the panelists' clinical work and research, how does racialized trauma feel and look for people of color in 2023? What are the psychological impacts of race- based trauma? 2) How do White Americans unlearn the racist messages our society instills within them?
