Asian, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians (hereinafter referred to as Asian Americans) have been historically excluded from the discourse of racial trauma. Without much needed scholarship to understand Asian Americans' experience in the context of systemic racism, opportunities to promote Asian American mental health and wellbeing may fall short. Thus, this symposium will highlight four independent investigations from the AAPI HEAling from Racial Trauma (HEART) Study, which aimed to explore how Asian Americans experience of and respond to racial trauma in the context of the syndemic of COVID-19 and anti-Asian racism. Together, these investigations utilize rigorous qualitative and quantitative methods to examine their research questions. The first presenter will present a study that examined the factor structure of the Race-Based Traumatic Stress Symptom Scale in Asian Americans. The second presenter will present a mixed method study examining qualitative themes related to the impact of COVID-19-driven anti-Asian racism, and associations with racial trauma. The third presenter will present a reflexive thematic analysis study that examined how Asian Americans describe responding to anti-Asian racism. Finally, the fourth presenter will present a study examining the psychometrics of the newly-developed Radical Hope Questionnaire.
